“We make WH&S faster, easier, accessible and extremely cost effective!”

Case Study 1 – First Aid on the Building Site

Dan R. rang the SDCA team from his building site. He was very angry and frustrated as an Inspector has arrived on scene and stated that his First Aid provisions were inadequate for his staff and that if he did not address it immediately, he would be given a non-compliance letter and would end up having to cease operations. The issue was the provision of a stretcher on site for any staff who were injured or incapacitated while at work. The Inspector had suggested a very expensive option to Dan: a multi-level auto stretcher approx. $3,450.

We listened carefully to Dan’s concerns and then as his appointed Safety Advisors, rang the Inspector for and on Dan’s behalf to discuss the matter. Our primary aim was to provide the safest possible option to Dan’s staff on-site that was fit-for-purpose.

The inspector had insisted that the multi-level auto stretcher be provided on-site but as ex-Fire & Rescue Officers & consultants with operational experience, we knew that this stretcher would be wrong for a rescue and carry-down to a waiting ambulance in the event of an incident. We respectfully explained this to the Inspector and negotiated a much more suitable and vastly more cost-effective stretcher, (Scoop-Stretcher). Within one hour and after a series of phone calls, SDCA had identified and secured the alternative stretcher at around $650. Work resumed on the building site and both Dan and the Inspector were very satisfied with the outcome.

SDCA researched, wrote, prepared and provided documentation for the Inspector on the stretcher, its capabilities, features and benefits of using this type in this situation. This then provided cover for Dan R. and his team on the choice of equipment. This documentation was also provided to Dan R’s Insurer for their information.

Dan R. and his team are long term clients of SDCA, receiving advice and assistance since SDCA first opened in 2004.

Case Study 2 – The Forklift Accident

There had been a terrible forklift accident at a storage and distribution warehouse. A worker had been badly injured and would never be returning to work in his life. The Authority had been involved with fines and penalties issued. The company was trying to get back on its feet and do safety differently. They had set up a sophisticated WH&S Management System, but this was proving to only be part of the solution.

Tick, Flick & Click, was just not cutting it. There had been a lot of near misses and Executive Management were concerned about their staff and liability issues in and around ‘Due Diligence’ & ‘Primary Duty of Care’ and the heavy penalties that the WH&S Legislation breaches had already brought after the accident. They wanted to do absolutely everything they could to improve safety in the workplace.

SDCA were asked to come in and provide guidance on what other areas could be improved on. We delivered a series of hard-hitting workshops that resonated with the staff. We educated them on the Legislation and their ‘Duties as Workers.’ We showed them how to do Risk Assessments and to spot Hazards in the workplace. We provided mentoring and coaching to a nominated staff member who then became confident and competent in ‘driving’ the WH&S agenda in the workplace.

There was a real shift in the culture towards safety and staff became properly engaged. To date there have been no accidents in the workplace with no days lost. Further, near miss incidents reduced by over 70% and this good record continues to today.

Case Study 3 – The new Company

Helen G had a great idea.  She wanted to start a mobile entertainment business that essentially bought the fun to the customers place – chairs, tables, music, decorations, video screens, lighting, a Bar, a dancefloor and much more. All her clients had to do was supply the food, the drink and the people!

Insurance and WH&S both were proving to be a huge challenge for Helen, and this is where SDCA was able to help. Inside 5 working days we had her up and running with a ‘Start-Up Package.’ With this package, Helen was able to introduce and embed WH&S into her new business in the shortest, easiest and most effective manner given her tight budget and timeline.

As her WH&S / Risk Advisors we (SDCA), provided the Insurance Brokerage with a detailed Risk Assessment (Level 1 Risk Survey), so that they knew exactly what they were insuring. This alone saved Helen over 30% on her insurance premiums original quote. As a subscriber she also saved hundreds of dollars in quality WH&S training, WH&S documentation and the right advice for safety equipment.  Helen G is one of our newer clients, joining SDCA in 2020.
